Ford may have been the first U.S. automaker to launch a fully electric pickup truck (the F-150 Lightning), but the Chevy Silverado EV came out swinging.
This Chevy EV may be a year behind the Lightning, but it outperforms Ford’s EV in almost every category. The rivalry continues, and drivers benefit from the competition.
Here’s how the Chevy Silverado EV stacks up against the Ford F-150 Lightning:
Where They Are The Same
There are plenty of similarities between the new electric Silverado and F-150. They both come with standard dual electric motors and all-wheel drive for starters. They both also only come in one cabin configuration featuring four doors. Shoppers will be able to choose from a couple of trims ranging from a budget-friendly workhorse up to a more costly show pony.
These pickup trucks bring some serious power to the table. You can expect to tow up to 10,000 pounds with either model. There are also rumors that both trucks will offer a massive driving range on a full charge and be able to hit 60 mph in around 4.5 seconds.
Since electric trucks don’t require the same kind of engine compartment that you find in a gasoline vehicle, both Ford and Chevy will offer a front trunk. Otherwise, the interior lines up with other Silverado and F-150 models. You’ll have options for things like a touchscreen infotainment center, onboard Wi-Fi, and more.
Where These Trucks Differ
While there are plenty of similarities between the Chevy Silverado EV and Ford Lightning, it’s the differences that seem to matter the most. Ford kept a relatively standard approach to Lightning’s design. It will feel familiar to anyone who’s driven an F-150 before. The Silverado, on the other hand, was designed from scratch. That means you’ll see a brand-new and unique look, unlike anything else in the Chevy lineup.
One of the benefits of delaying the release of the Chevy Silverado EV is that The Chevrolet Motor Company was able to improve on Ford’s EV specs. Here are how some of the more important specs compare:
- Price: Chevy’s base price is slightly lower than Ford’s intro cost
- Torque: The Silverado offers 780 lb-ft; Ford only offers 775 lb-ft
- Horsepower: Chevy’s EV produces 664 hp, while the Lightning only makes 563 hp
- Payload: The Silverado can handle up to 2,000 pounds. The Lightning can only take on 1,300 pounds
- Driving Range: Chevy boast 400 miles of range, which is 100 more than you can get with Ford
It’s a New World of Trucking
The Chevy Silverado EV and Ford F-150 Lightning release marks the beginning of a new era of powerful and capable pickup trucks. Other manufacturers are sure to follow suit, and the same competition we see across brands will continue.
While the Silverado clearly has better specs, drivers won’t be disappointed with either option. Shoppers who have a preferred brand will likely stick with their brand, but don’t be surprised to see a few people jump ship to try out the superior Chevy Silverado EV. It’ll be here before you know it.
