Why Did Ford Cancel the Next-Gen 2023 Ford Edge?

The Ford is a midsize two-row SUV that competes well in a hot segment of vehicles like the Honda Passport, Toyota Venza, and Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.

It’s known for offering supreme interior comfort, a spacious cabin, excellent fuel economy, and one of the quietest cabins on the road.

Despite the Ford Edge’s popularity, it looks like Ford is going to discontinue this attractive crossover SUV. It has been confirmed that 2023 will be the last year for shoppers to pick out a brand new Ford Edge. The Oakville Assembly Complex in Canada will no longer make this SUV. It is a sad day for many drivers who grew accustomed to the Edge’s responsive handling, buckets of style, and high-performance numbers.

The only real question is, why is this crossover, even with high sales numbers, getting the ax?

Ready Or Not, The Future Is Coming

Several years ago, Ford made a deal with the Canadian union Unifor to create five brand new electric vehicles starting in 2025. The EV segment is becoming one of the most high-demand segments in the automotive industry.

While some early movers, like Tesla, tend to be the first thought drivers have when they think of electric vehicles, Ford is making a move to be competitive in this field. It recently released the Ford Mustang Mach-E, a fully electric SUV that continues to uphold the reputation for speed and power associated with Mustang. Ford also announced an electric pickup truck called the Ford Lightning. Reservations for this powerful pickup took off to where Ford may never catch up with orders.

Ford is moving away from some of its gas-powered vehicles to make more room for new electric and hybrid options. Sadly, that means some of our favorite vehicles may not make it into the next round of production.

There’s Just Not Enough Room in Oakville

Since Ford has promised to release five new EVs out of the Oakville plant. There were likely some labor negotiations involved, but the reality is that it would be too costly to produce everything in one place.

To make room for the new EVs that are slated to come out of the Oakville plant, Ford decided to cease production of the Ford Edge and its luxurious cousin, the Lincoln Nautilus. The plant is set to be converted to an EV-only facility starting in 2024.

Maybe Not Gone Forever

In Canada, the Oakville plant isn’t the only place where the Ford Edge is assembled. There is also a Ford Plant in Chongqing, China. This plant is going to continue making more Ford Edge models for the Chinese market. Sadly, it does look like the Edge will be a thing of the past in North America.

For the time being, drivers who want to get ahold of one of these awesome SUVs can either buy the last new models coming out in 2023 or can keep an eye out for used models.
