EPA Sheds Lights on Hidden GMC Hummer EV Specs

By now, every auto enthusiast on the planet knows that the Hummer is back and totally electrified. The first edition of the resurrected nameplate has already sold out at every GMC dealer across the country. New editions are slated to hit the market over the next couple of years, so there are still plenty of opportunities to bring the Hummer EV home.

When this updated ride first hit your local GMC dealer, the only information we had available was what GMC shared. For example, GMC suggested that the 200-kWh Ultium battery would give the Hummer EV a driving range of 350 miles on a single charge. Of course, it’s hard to know if the manufacturer’s estimate actually reflects reality.

Now that the first edition of the Hummer EV has been on the road for a few months, we have confirmed information about this vehicle’s true specs.

What Did The EPA Find?

The EPA runs extensive tests to provide shoppers with accurate and acceptable data about vehicles each year. Based on the EPA’s inspections, we know how a concrete idea of how the Hummer stacks up against the competition.

For starters, the Ultrium battery offers a usable capacity of 212.7 kWh. This is not only more than what was expected, but it stands up nicely to the competition. The Hummer will provide a 329-mile EPA combined range at 47 MPGe. This is much less than the rival Rivian’s 70 MPGe rating.

These numbers show that the Hummer outperforms the upcoming Ford Lightning electric pickup truck. Ford is currently boasting a 300-mile driving range. What’s especially interesting is how the Hummer front and rear reduction ratios are very different. That means this automobile will shift its force to whichever axle is more efficient at any given moment. Now that’s adaptable driving.

The Hummer’s True Numbers

A spokesperson from this brand said that GMC dealers wouldn’t need to provide MPGe figures on the Hummer’s window stickers. Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating above 8,500 pounds are not typically required to provide this information on the window sticker.

While your local GMC dealer may not provide these numbers on the sticker, you should be able to confirm with your sales advisor. You should expect 51 MPGe in the city, 43 MPGe on the highway, and 47 MPGe combined.

Weight Makes a Difference

While EVs don’t have to deal with a heavy engine block under the hood, battery packs are coming in with high weights. These battery packs determine how the vehicle performs. For the Hummer, the battery pack weighs 2,923 pounds. That’s almost the entire weight of any small sedan on the market.

While a larger battery can lead to a higher driving range and more efficient driver, it can also mean higher costs. The Hummer Edition 1 starts at $110,295. Less expensive models are coming soon, but they may not offer the same performance specs.
