New Engines Show First Sign of $11 Billion Investment for Volvo
Geely, the parent company that purchased Volvo from Ford in 2010, is starting to show some fruits from their massive $11 billion investment into the research and development wing of the company as they have unveiled new engine architecture that is likely to make a big splash for the company in the very near future.
Drive-E Engine Architecture is starting off as gas-only, but there are plans to make a diesel variation with the new designs soon. Unveiled in Las Vegas earlier this month, the biggest question came regarding the nomenclature. The “T6” is a four-cylinder engine in the S60, but it’s a six-cylinder engine in the XC60. There is a method to their madness; soon all of their engines will be four-cylinder and they don’t want to have to introduce another name for the engine family.
“This is the biggest news to come from Geely since they bought Volvo,” said Holly Chambers of Jersey City Volvo. “It was a significant investment and we can’t wait to introduce the new technology to our customers.”
So far, the reviews have been nothing short but raving. Journalists and car people who participated have written strong reports about the new engines. According to Murfreesboro Post:
The fuel efficiency is further improved by nearly seamless start-stop and brake regeneration systems. While at a stop the engine uses an electric pump to keep oil pressure up in the new highly efficient eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The T6 engine is rated at 24 mpg city, 35 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. The 0 to 60 mph acceleration time is best in class at 5.6 seconds.
