The Volkswagen Golf Continues to Amaze Us
As the replacement for the old Rabbit that was popular in the 1980’s as a compact hatchback that offered a diesel engine and excellent performance the Golf has had its ups and downs in the American automobile market. The Golf has been around for a long time and as of a few years ago started to be one of the most popular cars on the market in the US to own and drive. With a dynamic drivetrain and a size that makes it easy to park anywhere, the Golf was destined for success, but with the increase in fuel prices the successes skyrocketed beyond expectations.
Once we realized just how awesome the Golf can be to drive Volkswagen couldn’t make them fast enough to handle the demand in the US and soon the Golf and Passat were top selling models from this German automaker that once only played in a niche market and was best known for the Beetle and the VW microbus that were both highly popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Now that we have realized the fun and engagement driving the Golf offers we have desired more year after year and it looks like we are about to get it.
After the GTI success, Volkswagen has now informed us they will unleash a power beast under the hood of a Golf as soon as next year. This new Golf will be the Golf R 400 which will absolutely enter the fray with a 400 horsepower engine to mate up with the performance and precision of the German engineering that is abound in the Golf lineup already. This gives us an awesome car to look forward to for driving with huge power that will certainly push the Golf to the limits of its own possibilities.
Some may think this is a bit much, putting 400 horses in a small two-door hatchback, but why not? This power will make it possible for this lightweight player in the power world to show off with exceptional speed and quickness. Because there is so little weight to move the new Golf-R just might be built to take on many sports cars on the track (no racing on the road please) and may even be able to beat some of them.
An interesting thought may be to see the Golf R 400 compared to other models in its class, which, when it comes to power, will not have an equal in the class at all. The Golf R 400 has everything going for it and is what many have maybe thought of for years but never really tried to do by putting such amazing power in a small car. The Golf seems to be the right platform for the job though because it has such a dynamic driving ability and control it may be the only hatchback on the road today to actually have the ability to handle this much power. When we see the Golf R 400 in the next model year, it will certainly gain more attention and as we see it up close and personal.
