The SUV Market Affect Honda Production

One of the most popular automotive plants in the country, the Marysville, OH plant for Honda will slow down production to avoid a shutdown.

There are already some automakers that are making dramatic changes in their lineups due to the desire for SUVs and trucks, while others are offering us new models and waiting out the storm. This change is due to the desire for the larger models that have been sought after for the past couple of years.

One Shift Change for this Honda Plant

For many years, the Marysville plant has been running three shifts of production and now, the second shift will temporarily be halted to allow sales to catch up with the number of models already in place at different Honda dealerships around the country.

This change will take place in August and it will affect one group of workers for one shift. There are other factors involved in shutting down this shift in order to make fewer models of the Accord and the Civic that we already love to drive.

The Honda Shift Will be Gone for a While

Another factor in cutting back on the production of the Accord and Civic models is the fact that the Marysville, OH plant will be tooled for the future. This plant will be the assembly plant of Honda that will produce some of the future electric vehicles, which means there needs to be room for the models to be built.

Another change to make room for the EVs of the future is that some of the CR-V models built in Marysville will now be built at the factory in Greensburg, IN where the Civic will also be reduced in production numbers.

How Will These Changes Affect the Workforce

Honda has stated there won’t be any layoffs that will take place because of the reduction in the number of shifts that are being run in Marysville. There could be some voluntary buyouts offered to some employees.

This is a change that makes sense and will make it possible for the Honda team to remain intact and offer us the cars, trucks, and SUVs that we love to drive. Once the EV models are in place, the second shift is expected to be added back to the Marysville, OH plant.
