The Mercedes-Benz VLE Wants to Turn Your Family Van Into a First-Class Lounge

Mercedes-Benz just pulled the wraps off its all-new VLE, a fully electric people mover that blurs the line between a minivan and a private limousine. Revealed in Stuttgart on March 10, 2026, the VLE is the brand’s boldest attempt yet to prove that vans deserve a spot in the luxury conversation. And yes, it’s coming to America.

A Brand-New Electric Platform Built for Vans

The VLE is the first production vehicle built on Mercedes-Benz’s new VAN.EA (Van Electric Architecture) platform, a modular structure developed to underpin the company’s next generation of large passenger and commercial vans. By moving to one scalable backbone, the company has cut production steps by 50% while packing in high-end tech like an 800-volt electrical system.

Both the VLE 300 and VLE 400 4MATIC use a battery with a net energy content of 115 kWh, which should push WLTP range past 700 kilometers. Because the NMC cells run on an 800-volt architecture, DC charging tops out at 320 kW. That means 15 minutes on a fast charger adds roughly 200 miles of range, enough time for a quick coffee stop before getting back on the road.

At launch, two variants will be available: the front-wheel-drive VLE 300 with about 268 horsepower and the all-wheel-drive VLE 400, which gets 409 hp. Because both models share the same 115 kWh battery, the VLE 300 is the better pick for buyers who want the longest range numbers. A VLE 250 with an 80 kWh LFP battery will follow later.

An Interior That Feels Like a Private Jet Cabin

Mercedes is pitching the VLE as a long-distance luxury shuttle for five to eight people. It comes with three types of rear seats, topped by what Mercedes calls the Grand Comfort Seat, which has a massage function, lumbar support, an additional pillow, and an electrically extending calf support.

Hidden in the headliner above the driver and front passenger is a retractable 31.3-inch panoramic screen with a split-screen function. Say “Hey Mercedes, start the cinema experience,” and the screen glides out of its compartment while the electric power seats move into a comfortable position and the window shades close. The screen turns the cabin into a personal retreat for movies, gaming, video conferences, or just winding down. An 8.0-megapixel camera is built in for business conference calls.

Other luxury features include three-zone climate control, rear-seat tables, a head-up display with augmented reality, and a 22-speaker Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos. The available center console offers two storage compartments that can be heated or cooled, a UV disinfection system, an Air-Balance fragrance generator, and two wireless charging options.

Up front, the driver gets a three-screen setup called the Superscreen: a 10.25-inch instrument display, a 14-inch central touchscreen, and a 14-inch passenger screen shielded from the driver’s view. For anyone who values genuine Mercedes parts and first-rate engineering, every piece of this cabin reflects the brand’s obsession with getting the details right.

Versatility That Matches the Luxury

Like the old V-Class, the VLE’s redesigned seats can pivot all the way around so the two rear rows face each other. Lock them down at any point on the floor tracks, and if you don’t need seating for eight, simply remove the seats for more cargo room. Three seat types are available: Comfort (manual), Premium Comfort (electric), and Grand Comfort (electric with all the trimmings).

The VLE comes with Airmatic air suspension that uses Google Maps data to keep the vehicle as low as possible for as long as possible, squeezing out every extra mile of range. The suspension provides up to 1.5 inches of travel, and up to seven degrees of rear-wheel steering gives the VLE a 35.75-foot turning radius. That’s on par with some sedans, which is wild for a vehicle this size.

The VLE 400 4MATIC can tow trailers weighing up to 2.5 tonnes, opening the door for boat trailers, caravans, and bike carriers. Mercedes also claims a slippery drag coefficient of 0.25, which helps explain how a van this big can stretch its range so far.

When Can You Actually Buy One?

Pricing and launch timing for North America haven’t been finalized, though officials at Mercedes-Benz headquarters in Germany say the current production timetable calls for U.S. variants to be ready for deliveries during the second half of 2026. Mercedes-Benz USA’s own website says the VLE will appear on American roads in 2027. Tariffs could nudge the price higher, since the vehicles will be built in Vitoria, Spain.

Mercedes plans to sell a range of versions, from family-friendly configurations to exclusive shuttle trims, so expect a wide spread between the entry-level and top-spec models. The platform also supports electrified combustion powertrains, and Mercedes representatives have mentioned that not even diesel is out of the question.

Whether the VLE can crack the American market remains an open question. In Europe, it looks like a safe bet because buyers there already understand premium vans and shuttle-style MPVs. In the U.S., it’s harder to see it become a big seller, as vehicles like the old Metris never really caught on. But with this level of comfort, technology, and range, the VLE might just change a few minds.
