SEMA, Questionable Cars

2016 SEMA Green Tricycle

SEMA would not be complete without some cars that are purposefully tacky.  As the show that gives us a look at the vast creativity that is present in the automotive world we also get a glimpse at what not to do with cars when this show occurs each year.  In some cases the cars that are presented are ugly and hideous on purpose to gain the attention of the crowd but in some cases the creator thought the vehicle was a great looking version of the original which was only proved wrong by the crowd reaction.  With these thoughts in mind, here are ten of the worst cars to make their way to SEMA this year, enjoy:

Green TricycleThis tricycle showed up and appeared to be cut right out of a horror or science fiction movie.  This was a vehicle you might expect to find in the Adams Family show as the gift for one of the children as their first ride.  With lime green and black paint along with several ghoulish figures sticking out all over its easy to see this fabricator was going for a Halloween theme because the holiday landed so close to the show dates.

Crystal PorscheAny vintage Porsche looks awesome when it’s been kept in pristine condition.  Bringing a Porsche 356 to the SEMA show sounded like a great idea for this company that did so, but the problem is not only did they ugly the car up with thousands of crystals all over it, they also added hundreds of pounds which would certainly hamper the performance of the car.  If anyone knows who brought this monstrosity to the SEMA show they should come forward so the guilty party can face the charges of Porsche abuse which certainly is a serious crime in this case.

Lexus Looking Wrong Lexus is already known for their over the top designs and the spindle grill which has finally caught some air of acceptance.  For the most part the brand thumbs their proverbial noses at the rest of the auto world and doesn’t care what they think, but even Lexus might feel this car went too far.  What we see here is a Pepto Bismol Pink Lexus that looks awful and needs to be repainted right away.  Whoever got the idea this would be acceptable certainly needs to give it another try and choose a different color.

Smart Gone WildAnother crazy creation was the offering of a Smart car that has an enormous wing, huge wheels and even some body moldings underneath.   This car has massive exhaust pipes that spit fire and certainly let us know this car is no longer an electric drive.  Overall this car is kind of interesting to view, but begs the question of how much power was put in and just how safe would this car be to take to a track or even just drive on the road.  Interesting; yes; practical; certainly not; but this one wasn’t the ugliest at the show, just one of the top ten.

Lifted Truck Its cool to see just how far some lift kits can go and anyone who is a fan of monster trucks might have been able to appreciate this lifted version had the right wheels, tires, colors and everything else been used.  This truck was painted gray with a pink undercarriage and pink trim on the grill, which could have been overlooked except for the city tires and huge rims that tell you this truck is not built for off roading, which is certainly a shame because it had all the right parts to ride over some heavy duty boulders.

Puce Sports CarAt least puce is the color I think it is.  This car appears to have a variety of different parts for different makers built into it.  It could easily qualify as the franken-car but it does have the symmetry needed to look pretty cool and appear ready to tear down the road.  That is if the creator had not chosen a color that only a mother might be able to love and certainly didn’t get enough attention.  This car, while interesting, would eventually be hard to look at in your driveway; no thank you.

Huh? – One entry at the SEMA show was a Dodge Avenger.  While we can all admire the Avenger and this one had a nice paint job with the black bottom and white top the question here was “why is this car here?”  The Avenger did not offer any upgrades, modifications or other alterations to show off at the show and unless it was someone’s daily driver car certainly was out of place at this car show for modified and cars to showcase the aftermarket parts that can be added to the car.  I guess this car lost its way when looking for the right parking spot.

Scion Thing Given the name because it’s a Scion iA, which hasn’t even been on the market for long this car was painted in all gold with a bit of a design on the hood but the interesting part was the modification to the front and the wheels that stuck out like a sore thumb.  Let’s allow this car to break into the market and show us what Scion had in mind before we start to change is personality and make a car that doesn’t belong.

Superman Made an AppearanceReally?  Unless this Chrysler 300 is going to be present at the debut of a Superman movie there was no logical reason for this car to be made at all.  With graphics all over the hood, windshield, doors and roof this car even had a pop down trunk that showed a bust of Superman surrounded by Kryptonite.  I would say this car was its own Kryptonite and need to be scrapped as the ideal was certainly beyond hideous, it was just completely awful and didn’t make any sense at all to have a car at SEMA with this theme.

Jacked up CrossCabrioletIt was bad enough when Nissan offered the Murano CrossCabriolet for sale, but someone went and jacked it up and put huge rims underneath the already awful vehicle.  This certainly made it look even worse than it had before, but for those who had the poor taste to choose this vehicle for purchase in the first place we shouldn’t be too surprised they went farther and added even more ugly to the mix.  This is a car that should be driven right to the scrap yard and put in the crusher never to be seen or heard from again.

These ten vehicles certainly had one good thing in common, they all took a great deal of imagination to create and build (except the Avenger of course).  Even though a lot of hard work was present, the beauty is not always in the eye of the beholder, but also in the reaction of the crowd and the overall usefulness of the vehicle.  The reaction to this group was simple a lot of ugly in one place doesn’t make it beautiful and these creators need to go back to work to design something that is much more acceptable to a larger crowd.
