When you think of the single name that has been on nearly every racing circuit in the world and offers us the top supercar name in the industry we are thinking of Ferrari. This brand has been at the forefront of many racing breakthrough throughout the years and the Ferrari team has come up with some of the most impressive vehicles we’ve ever seen to take to the track. Because of their long history there is one racing circuit that might consider changing so that Ferrari will feel comfortable competing in it.
Currently the format for Formula E racing offers a new and impressive way for race teams to drive electric race cars. This series has become extremely popular and is seeing continued growth. At the moment only one chassis is used for Formula E racing and it’s a Spark chassis. CEO Alejandro Agag has stated he doesn’t see the series becoming a multi-make series when it comes to the chassis builds, but he might want to reconsider this possibility. This is especially true if he wants Ferrari to participate in the series and help boost the visibility of this racing series.
Recently Ferrari CEO, Sergio Marchionne, stated that Ferrari is interested in competing in Formula E racing but there are some drawbacks that make it difficult for Ferrari to enter the fray. Right now the race teams are required to change cars to a new one that’s fully charged up when the charge runs out on the first one they use. This is a drawback for Ferrari, which would want one car to be able to race around the track for the entire time of the race so they can put their best car out on the track to be used by the drivers.
Another part of the hesitation for Ferrari is the standardization with the electric car. Ferrari would prefer to be able to put their own technical spin on these vehicles and how they should perform on the track and not be stuck to a standardized car that’s the same as ever other car. While there are rules for cars and for their builds on ever racing series in the world, there are also many racing series out there that allow automakers to create different models that are perfect for the ride around the track to make it to the finish line.
The unique way that Ferrari develops their vehicles could be extremely useful for Formula E racing, but the racing series isn’t ready for these changes to take place just yet. Maybe in a few years, when the series has grown enough to attract and even greater following, Ferrari will feel they are able to join up, but these statements from Marchionne might be enough to begin the talk of changing and adapting the rules to make it easier for Ferrari to be part of this series. It’s possible we’ll see Ferrari on the track for Formula E in the near future.
