High End SUVs Compared
It’s almost cliché anymore that an automaker will build an SUV at some point in their existence. The Porsche Cayenne and Macan have been rolling for many years and other top of the market brands have come out with their own versions of what they think we want to drive. The wide variety of high end SUVs is meant to give customers a sports car or luxury sedan from the company and an SUV with the same brand name on it as well. This brings about some brand loyalty and one of the new comers to the market is the Jaguar F-Pace which is in the same class as the Porsche Macan.
The Macan is actually a four-door compact SUV that is meant to be a sports SUV in the same lines as the 911. This SUV has been the favorite drive of many who want the Porsche performance oriented drive without the weight or size of a large SUV. So far, this SUV has been a huge success and gives many owner the benefit of a great ride with the space they need for the family, making this one of the few Porsche models that appeals the whole clan.
In an effort to replicate the success of Porsche with the Macan, Jaguar offers the F-Pace as a new model that is sporty and fun to drive. This model has had to tow a specific line since Jaguar is part of Land Rover and a crossing of the brand would be detrimental to the sales potential. This SUV is one of the most impressive sports SUVs that have come along in a while, giving us a luxury ride with more space than we see with the sports coupes and sedans that come from this exciting and exalted brand.
The Macan, as you would expect from Porsche, can come in a variety of builds and offer the variation that many customers look for from Porsche to make the vehicle feel like a custom built model that was made just for them. The Jaguar offers six different trim packages in an effort to not be outdone. The F-Pace can be packaged in a variety of ways and comes to you at a price that’s actually a lot less than the Macan, making the F-Pace the more affordable option and the one that has more trims to offer you the vehicle you want to drive.
When it comes to power the Porsche uses a 3.0-liter twin turbocharged V6 engine that is able to push out 360 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque to make for one of the most powerful engines in this class. While that engine is powerful, the supercharged V6 that’s the same size which powers the F-Pace gives us more power to enjoy. The Jag offers up 380 ponies and 332 lb.-ft. of torque to make more horses from under the hood to be the vehicle that you would look to for the initial power charge you want to enjoy.
As for the straight line speed of these two models, the Macan pushes the power through the seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission and uses an impressive AWD system. This setup makes it easy to understand how this lightweight SUV can produce a time to reach sixty mph of only five seconds flat. One the other hand, the F-Pace uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and an AWD system that has a rear bias. While heavier this SUV is still able to reach the sixty mph mark in an impressive 5.1 seconds making it one that can easily be on the road with the Macan and give it a solid run.
When it comes to fuel efficiency, the Jaguar model outperforms the Porsche. The F-Pace is able to return a combined 20.5 mpg while the Macan will only reach 16.7 mpg as a combined rate. On the inside you see what you expect, which is impressive styling that fits each brand perfectly and gives you the comfort and sport you’re looking for.
If you want a real driving edge, the Macan is the right choice with a more responsive steering system and a suspension that is truly a Porsche build. On the other hand, if you want more fuel efficiency and a bit more power at a lower price, the F-Pace is a fantastic choice for your driving pleasure.
