We Discussed the Rumors, Now See the Car

Over the past several months Tesla has been in the news for several different reasons. Earlier in the year CEO Elon Musk showed off the new direction of Tesla which is to build an affordable model called the Model 3 in mass production form. He even opened up preorders of this car to which the reaction was much more than Tesla has ever experienced with over 400,000 preorders being placed with the promise of delivery to begin hopefully by 2018 of this new car.

While this impressive reaction to the new car was what Tesla had hoped for the idea that they could mass produce to the tune of nearly 500,000 units a year has been discussed with the goal having been set by Elon Musk. Along the way current issues have plagued Tesla as well, including the problems with the Model X that have had Musk camped out at the end of the Model X production line answering many of the customer calls on his own. Not only has Tesla faced several issues with production and the workings of their vehicles they have also given their Model S a facelift by taking away the grill, which certainly wasn’t necessary.

In more turmoil the Tesla Model S was involved in an accident that resulted in the death of one many and at least two of these vehicles have reportedly caught fire while hooked up to supercharging stations. While the death is certainly not the fault of Tesla, this isn’t a car that’s fully autonomous as of yet, it didn’t serve to give the car any positive coverage at all. Of course we also have the story of another man who was carried to the hospital emergency room by his Tesla Model S, making for an opposite and heartwarming story.

While all of this news is worthy of the interest that Tesla brings to the market there was one piece of news that has now come to fruition and started out as simply a rumor. A hacker was able to find code in the programming of the Model S that suggested a 100 kWh battery could be in the works and be used in the future to power the vehicle. This was met simply with a congratulations on finding the code by Elon Musk and no denial, but no verification if there really would be such a car.

Now we know the Tesla Model S P100D with Ludicrous Mode has been revealed to the world and Elon Musk proudly announced this car to be the third fasted production car ever made and the fastest currently in production. This new version of the Model S is able to reach sixty mph in only 2.5 seconds which is wickedly quick. The only two that surpassed this car ever have been the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder, both of which are currently no longer in production, making the Model S P100D the king of speed, at least for now.

Not only does this new 100 kWh batter give the Model S this blazing speed, but it also offers a range that’s estimated to be nearly 315 miles. This becomes the first EV to ever make it over 300 miles of range, which is the first goal to have a car that can drive for nearly as long as a vehicle powered by gasoline. Both of these accomplishments out of the new battery pack mark historic significance for electric power in the automotive world and ensure the sustainability of sustainable transportation for the future of the automotive industry.

This car is expected to be extremely limited at first, but it could become more widespread with more demand. There seems to be a great deal more complexity creating the 100 kWh batter over the 90 kWh battery pack and the estimated production is expected to be limited to no more than 200 of these batteries per week. This amazing achievement for Tesla continues to make them a target for other automakers to strive toward with their EV models and certainly an interesting company for us to discuss on a regular basis whenever they are in the news, which seems to be often these days.
