Concept Heading for Production

Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Honda have long been the top names in motorcycle manufacturing, at least for the smaller, racing bikes. Harley-Davidson and others of course have cornered the market for the cruising machines, but for the “crotch rocket” crowd that loves their sport bikes, these four names have been the standard for all others to aspire to. Yamaha, Kawasaki and Honda have all produced new and better bikes in recent years, while Suzuki has sat back on its proverbial haunches and watched from the sidelines.

Whether their apathy had to do with their run into the car and SUV markets, almost leaving them to forget the motorcycle division that gained them so much popularity, or they were developing what is about to head to production is a question only Suzuki can answer. Regardless of the “why” factor, Suzuki is about to dispel any rumors and feelings of their apparent apathy with the Suzuki Recursion heading to production.

The Recursion is a really interesting motorcycle that was introduced a few years ago at the Tokyo Auto Show. This motorcycle will be powered by a 588cc middle positioned twin-cylinder water cooled engine. What is new (because 588cc doesn’t sound like much in motorcycle lingo) is the turbocharger that will be included. What this does is the same as what automobile engines are seeing, better fuel efficiency with more power when the turbochargers and superchargers are present.

With this small, but powerful engine in place, the Recursion will produce approximately 100 horsepower and 74 lb.-ft. of torque, huge numbers on the scale of these small sized motorcycles. In fact, the power will also be produced at a much lower RPM in order to make the engine much more efficient. Suzuki says this bike will be so efficient it will be the most efficient motorcycle in the 600cc class, quite a feat, especially with the power included.

As for looks, the Recursion nearly looks like a futuristic bike with the center mounted engine. This mounting of being directly under and in front of the rider allows for much easier control and smoother riding giving confidence in handling at higher speeds. The rear wheel almost appears completely detached from the bike and the front controls run through the front body plate, appearing to separate from the front fork entirely. With these attractive features, the Recursion is a great looking motorcycle that will give a rider joy to show off to their friends and neighbors.

A Suzuki prepares for the production run of the Recursion; it will be interesting to learn what model year this bike will be released for. In my opinion it can’t come soon enough as Suzuki has put so many irons in the fire over the years it has almost gotten away from what made it a world leading company in the first place, which is its awesome motorcycle division. Now that the Recursion is up for production, this division can rejoice and proudly display its hard work that comes in an industry changing turbocharged motorcycle.
