The Monterey Car Week ended a few months ago and we’re left with that familiar feeling of exhilaration, hope and exhaustion at the number of amazing cars that were on display during this year’s week of glory at Pebble Beach. We saw the highest price for an American car at auction and several high priced European models that took home some huge numbers, but the most interesting reveal at the Car Week could easily be the two concepts that made their way to the event. Both Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz offered us a look at what the future may hold.
Mercedes-Benz brought us a massive car that measured a full 18.5 feet long and seven feet wide. This is almost large enough to be a home on wheels in the form of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6. Inside this car four people can find the glorious comfort they want through the entry of a pair of gullwing doors. Interestingly this car shows up powered by electricity with the use of an 80 kWh batter pack that drives four electric motors, one at each wheel. We don’t know the actual power numbers just yet, but the range is around 200 miles and this car is expected to reach sixty mph in as little as four seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.
Just to look at this gorgeous car you would instantly become an admirer. The low slung build with a split back glass look gives the Vision 6 a feeling of being a car that has some inspiration from an era that’s passed us by. This beauty rides on huge 24-inch wheels and has an augmented reality windshield, which may be the future of driving as we know it as it certainly stole the show and has a large crowd around it from the time the car was unveiled.
Cadillac was in no mood to be outdone by Mercedes-Benz and brought a wonderful concept of their own. This event has been a friendly place for Cadillac to show off its concepts and this year was no exception as the Cadillac Escala Concept was shown off at Pebble Beach. Compared to the Maybach this car appears to be one that could be turned into a production model right away and shows up as a car that could soon be the next flagship of the brand as it’s even more upscale than the recently released CT6.
The power for the Escala comes from a brand new 4.2-liter twin turbocharged V8 engine that is expected to deliver all the power you need and use the GM Active Fuel Management system to improve fuel mileage when the car only needs to use four cylinders. Every area of the Escala is full of intrigue and perfection in the form of amazing luxury to be the next great Cadillac that’s ready to head to the presses and make its way on the roads by next year, or maybe 2018, either one would be perfect for the Cadillac lineup.
Can you pick between these two beautiful concepts? I sure can’t. On one hand you have a car that could give Rolls-Royce a run for its money when it comes to over the top luxury in the form of the Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6. On the other hand you have a car that’s easily ready to head to the production line and be the flagship sedan we’ve been promised from Cadillac for several years. Both of these cars garnered massive attention at the Monterey Car Week, giving them both huge positive reviews for the brands to prepare for the production models, but which one is your favorite?
