Aston Martin: Sensible or Snobbish?

What are we seeing on the market these days?  We are seeing more and more SUVs being offered and they have gone from big honking truck-like plow machines to sophisticated and almost car like sensible driving vehicles.  The crowds keep asking for SUVs to be smaller, ever since we saw the first crossover that drove like a car but gave us some great space.  In many cases SUVs are becoming much more sport than utility which has made room for some of the most highly acclaimed names in the industry to enter the fray.

The names that have started making SUVs include Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley and even Rolls-Royce.  They have obviously seen where an SUV needs to be in their lineup in order for them to survive and because we want smaller ones that offer the sporty drive yet have more space, these automakers are easily able to accommodate our needs.  This gives them the opportunity to capture the fastest growing part of the market and still maintain their name status and carry plenty of great sports or luxury cars for us to still marvel at and hang up as posters on our walls at home.

What about Aston Martin?  For some reason we have not heard from this British automaker about creating an SUV until recently when a statement was released informing us they will not be building any SUV.  For some reason the brass at Aston Martin is under the impression they need to build Range Rover style vehicles in order to be in the SUV market, maybe they should take a look at some of the offerings of their own direct competitors to see what is being built before they decide the entire purpose of an SUV is to build a box on wheels that maximizes versatility.

So far the closest thing we will see to an Aston Martin SUV is the DBX electric crossover concept which hasn’t even been approved for production.  Their stated goal is to continue to offer an entire lineup that is full of beautiful driving cars rather than boxy utilitarian vehicles.  What this means for Aston Martin is they will continue to miss out on a fast growing part of the market but they don’t seem to really care about that as much as they care about keeping their cars beautiful, which they certainly are, there is no argument on that particular point.

With all this in mind, is Aston Martin being snobbish or sensible?  In my opinion they are being snobbish, especially when you see the offerings that are coming out of some of the other exotic car companies.  There is really no reason they couldn’t develop a gorgeous compact crossover SUV that would be at as attractive as some of their other vehicles already are.  I guess we will have to wait until the market is completely saturated or until they come to their senses before we get the pleasure of actually having an Aston Martin SUV on the market to discuss.
