The Ford Mustang is one of the cars that does compete in the NHRA Funny Car competitions, but you might not recognize this car when you see it race down the track at insane speeds. For the past ten years, the Ford Performance team has been driving the same Ford Mustang body on the NHRA tracks. The 2019 Ford Mustang version of this car will receive a new body that will begin to compete during the races that start the second weekend in February in Pomona, CA at the Internationals.
The Development of the Funny Ford
The new funny car look for this Ford took a different route than what you would expect to see for a normal car. The final aerodynamics testing, which an extremely important part of this car, was done using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This testing was done using scale models and not by using full-size models for the tests. This means the first full-size model that was created from this information is one that was meant to make it to the track and be ready to compete against the rest of the crowd at the different NHRA tracks.
A Lengthy Process
The Ford Performance team revealed the new funny car look and creating has been in the works since October 2017. This means there were likely several of the scale models used to test the numbers and create the right aerodynamics that could be enlarged to the full-size racer that would ride on the track. The new Mustang, which hasn’t been updated for ten years, needed to be improved in the areas of downforce, drag, weight balance, and structural rigidity to create the car that could make it across the finish line in the first place more often than it has recently.
The Looks and Personality You’ll Love as Well
The team of Bob Tasca III and Tim Wilkerson will drive the new 2019 version of the Ford Mustang Funny Car and the priority wasn’t just on performance but on keeping the Mustang identity intact as well. The team stated they worked to add items or take some away that would move the car further from the Mustang look and feel, but if it didn’t enhance performance enough, they didn’t make the change. This allowed them to stay as true as possible with a look that reflects the Mustang and what it stands for.
Check Out the Look and the Speed of this Mustang
If you watch the new Mustang Funny Car drive on the NHRA track, you’ll see a car that can accelerate from zero to 330 mph in less than four seconds. You’ll also see headlights with the three stripes and the logo that indicate the origins of this car and the influence allowed. This car will make the ride around the Nitro circuit this year and you can check it out in person or watch online or on TV and have the chance to admire what the Ford Performance team has created.
