Autonomy in Several Forms
When Audi headed to the recent Frankfurt Motor Show they took along three models that offered three different forms of autonomous driving technology to give us an idea of what they plan for the future. The new Audi A8 we’ve seen and it offers you the Level 3 autonomy which allows the car to take over during some driving conditions while also requiring you as the driver to pay attention and continue to be engaged. They also bring the Aicon which could have Level 5 autonomy which is a fully autonomous model with no controls for the driver at all.
Splitting the difference between the A8 and the Aicon was the Audi Elain which shows up with the Level 4 autonomous driving system. The Elaine is based on the Audi e-Tron Sportback concept and uses the self-driving technology found in the A8 that can take over the driving duties at speeds of up to 80 mph. When it does take over the driving duties, Elain can take over and drive you on a highway trip for the entirety of the drive and have the ability to change lanes on its own during the ride.
This new model is completely electric because of the car its based on. This is a car that can find its own charging port which takes the stress off you as the driver to find the place to park and charge the car during the day. Elaine is being made to be able to fit into your life even more with the qualities you’ll want and the ability to handle the duties that can take up your time and energy during the maintenance and servicing of this car that you know needs to get done periodically.
Elaine Works for You
The new Elaine concept is a car that will do more than just head out and find a place to charge so that you don’t have to, but it will begin to read and learn your habits. Some of the self-driving qualities, such as self-parking will require the car to be in an Audi AI Zone, but this is an important part of the future for this brand and will be easy to find when you’re looking for a place to park or drive in the Elaine once it comes to the market and becomes a reality.
The Elain will learn when you want to clean the car and do it for you. It will learn when it needs to be serviced and drive itself to the dealership to allow this to happen. The seats, air conditioning, and audio system will be able to read and learn a variety of drivers and passengers while also offering the ability to communicate with other cars on the road. This is certainly one more step forward toward the need to have a car that can take on some of the challenges of driving and handle the work for you to take away some of the mundane tasks you don’t want to be bothered with.
