2016 Subaru BRZ: The Car You Want to Drive

When you are presented with the choice between trudging along in the mass exodus called rush hour where you don’t feel anyone is actually rushing or the opportunity to take the back roads and see what your car can offer you on the backroads toward your home what do you choose?  If you have the new BRZ at your disposal you should choose the backroads, especially when they are open and empty in order to see what this awesome sports car can do for you.  With most sports cars you don’t drive them as your commuter choice, but this is one that makes a huge difference and lets you enjoy the ride wherever you might choose to drive.

As a lightweight, rear drive, car with a low center of gravity and dynamic performance that comes at a great price you know the BRZ to be the only Subaru to not be built with standard AWD, but this is a different car with a singular purpose; driving excitement.  You will notice a new Starlink Multimedia system with a 6.2-ich touchscreen display on this car to help control you entertainment and information you need from the car.  Another new feature is the Series.HyperBlue trim package that will be built in a limited quantity to offer only 500 models to a few fortunate shoppers.

The drive is the best part of this car.  It’s not the power, and it’s not the speed, much like the Miata, the BRZ gives you the engineering you want on a car that is setup for fun on the road.  With the precision of the steering system, an engine that moves immediately, the suspension and chassis that provide confidence to the driver’s seat and brakes that are made to help handle the ride you can toss this beauty around on the road and it will come back asking for more.

As I mentioned there is an active and peppy engine under the hood and with this car you only have one to make the selection easy.  This engine is a 2.0-liter flat four-cylinder model that helps provide the lower center of gravity and give you 200 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque.  The transmission choice is between a manual or automatic six-speed transmission to give you the fuel mileage of 22 city/30 hwy mpg for the manual and 25 city/34 hwy mpg for the automatic.  The automatic is only available on the Limited trim, making the manual the standard offering and keeping the purists happy with this sports car.

When you look to the BRZ for your sports car daily driving fun, you can feel comfortable with the price you have to pay which starts out in the Premium trim at just under $26,500.  The Limited trim will only ask for $2,000 more to start but adding the automatic transmission will add another $1,100 to be a car you can drive anywhere.  The Series.HyperBlue edition will show up at a price of $28,500, which is in line with the rest of this lineup to make it an easy car to own.

One reason the price range is so small on this car is the face the BRZ comes loaded up with features on the two different trim levels.  The standard offerings for the Premium trim give you the Starlink multimedia system with a 6.2-inch touchscreen, a Torsen limited-slip differential, power windows and mirrors, a tilt/telescoping steering column and a manually adjustable air conditioning system.  The Limited adds the dual-zone automatic climate control system; Alcantara trimmed upholstery, keyless access, fog lights, a trunk spoiler, heated side mirrors, heated front seats and illuminated visor vanity mirrors.  The only real option you can add to this car is the automatic transmission although there may be some dealer options you can have added as well.

Overall there are two features of this car that make a huge difference to drivers and make this car fit with the personality that it delivers.  These are the handling and fuel mileage.  This is a car you can quickly whip in and out of every curve and twist on the road to ask you for more and test your skills as a driver.  The fuel mileage will keep you on the road longer and is efficient enough to make this a car you can enjoy driving every single day regardless of the needs.  When you have had a long day at work, the BRZ can be the right therapy for the ride home to energize and excite you.

Looking at the BRZ from the outside you will see an attractive sports car that has a large grill to allow the air to flow into the engine the right way.  The shape gives you some dynamic aero to make it a quick and witty sports car.  The athletic stance of the BRZ shows an active but planted position to give you the confidence you will want to have a car that is ready for the road ahead.  There is nothing quite as beautiful as a long hood and a smooth transition across the roofline to the rear.  This travel in visual appeal makes the BRZ a car you will want to drive that gives you a hint at some of the roadsters we enjoyed looking at several decades ago.

The interior of the BRZ is a place you will have the most fun.  Although this car does have rear seats you are better off letting this be where you put your bag or other small item and make this a two-seater sports couple.  The controls are easy to find, giving you an instant driving excitement and the confidence you can take off and have a great ride.  Are you looking for the luxury features; you won’t find them.  This car knows what it’s supposed to be and does a great job of offering you the gauges you want to see and the drive you want to experience to have a sporty and active ride in a car you want to keep tossing around on the road.
