Toyota Camry Showing the Real MPG You Want
We have loved the Camry for several years through generational changes in the car to allow it to become one of the best-selling midsized sedans in history. The Camry shows up with a lineup of great models and gives us the progressive nature we desire as Toyota continues to add new and better technology to many of its models including the Camry. By checking out how a variety of the Camry models stacked up against comparable competitors you can easily see why we continue to love our Camrys and why it been and probably will continue to be one of the best-selling midsized sedans on the market.
The LE shows up with a 2.5-liter inline four cylinder engine partnering with a six-speed automatic transmission, which is the most common offering across the Camry lineup. Because this is a common setup there were several competitors to compare it against including the Chrysler 200 Limited, Hyundai Sonata Eco, Hyundai Sonata Limited, Mazda6 i Touring, Chevrolet Malibu LT, Honda Accord Sport, Kia Optima EX, Nissan Altima SV, Volkswagen Passat Sport and Honda Accord EX-L. In this group, the Camry LE came in seventh overall for combined real mpg with 27.3 mpg. This does make the Camry a very efficient vehicle as it was within a couple mpg of many of the best on this list.
This model of the Camry is powered by the V6 engine and shows up with only a couple real competitors including the Chevrolet Malibu LTZ Turbo and Hyundai Sonata 2.0T. The Camry comes up in between these other two with a combined real mpg of 24.2 mpg which is only one mpg behind the Sonata on this very short list of competitors. The higher power of this model gives the Camry more to love and makes for a great option.
With only a couple true hybrids that are comparable in this segment currently, more are expected in the next couple years, but right now the only other true hybrid without being a plug in model is the Honda Accord Hybrid Touring. When compared, the Camry came in well behind the Accord in the real mpg race with a 36.5 mpg combined rate while the Accord brought in 44.3 mpg. This difference was about the same difference for both against the EPA rating as well, making it the difference in driving as the variable that creates the lower numbers.
What have we actually shown here? Why is the Camry not leading across the entire competition? The Camry continues to be one of our favorites on the road and offers fantastic fuel efficiency even though there are direct competitors that offer more as far as fuel numbers. Overall, buying a Camry is a great choice with the Toyota name on the car; you know you will be gaining a car that offers you reliability, a great resale value, and the ability to fully enjoy driving in the dynamic and highly popular daily driver of the Camry.
