Aston Martin DBX

To Get the DBX Rolling a Plant Site Must be Selected

As Aston Martin works toward the goal of being able to offer an IPO and the possibility of expanding the lineup it has beyond the ultra-exclusive super coupes that is has been known for there are many decisions to be made.  One of these includes deciding where in the world the new DBX should be built.  The DBX is to be the first crossover SUV from Aston Martin which had several times stated they couldn’t see building an SUV, but now with some push and a design that should be dynamic and attractive enough to wear the name the site for a plant must be chosen.

Several locations are up for consideration for this honor, all of which make perfect sense to the factors at play.  After starting with a shortlist that includes 19 possibilities the company has narrowed it down to just four options that could be chosen.  Two of these locations are in the UK, one in the Middle East and one is actually in the United States which would be a serious change from some of the directions the company has taken over the years.

The UK possibilities involve a former Royal Air Force base in Wales which would bring about significant government incentives to build there, the former Browns Lane plant of Jaguar in Coventry and an eighty-acre plot that is located in the Sutton Coldfield area.  All three of these locations make perfect sense as the company is a British one and employing the workforce of the homeland makes sense for this high end automaker to have the right place to build the new DBX crossover SUV.

Although there isn’t much known about the location under consideration in the Middle East the fact that 56 percent of Aston Martin is owned by Kuwaiti investment companies this makes sense as much as the UK based locations.  The other holders of the company include a 39 percent share by Italian holding companies and five percent investment Daimler has in the company.  With the thought in mind if either keeping the production of the DBX in the home country or near the largest investors it’s a wonder the US is even being considered.  Why would the US be a consideration for the building of the DBX and a new plant to produce the model?

The new DBX may have Mercedes- Benz underpinnings and the GLE and GLS-Class models are built in Alabama at the Mercedes- Benz plant.  With this in mind, if the final, approved version of the DBX is based on the lineup from Mercedes- Benz it only makes sense that the SUV be built here in the US.  Of course if Aston Martin chooses to have the structure of the crossover SUV be of their own design then the SUV will most likely not be built in the US at all.  As it stands the US seems the least likely of the locations for the plant, unless the vehicle actually does become based off the pair of Mercedes- Benz models.
