Porsche 911 Carrera GTS

Luxury Fun In a Comparison

Whatever you have read about the top of the performance ladder for luxury cars, almost all of them seem to be amazing vehicles that are more than adequate for driving on a daily basis and certainly will give you the ride of your life when taken to an open road and allowed to show off the awesome capabilities and performance that is part of the experience. What we don’t get as often is a comparison of three of the top vehicles for their brands to review side by side and see which one of these cars will give you the most for your luxury dollar.

For many years luxury car makers have targeted the Porsche 911 with little success. The 911 continues to come out on top as the longest running sports car on the market with others trying to reach the engaging performance but none have come close until recently. This comparison brings in the Jaguar F-type R Coupe and Mercedes-AMG GT S, both for 2016 and compares them with the 2015 model of the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS; let’s see how this turns out.

Because the 911 has so many variations it’s actually difficult to find the one that matches the Mercedes-AMG as closely as possible. The power choice would the 911 Turbo which has 520 horsepower but plays in a much higher price bracket, which is why the Carrera GTS is the selection made. This gives the AMG a horsepower edge over the Porsche which shows up with 430 horsepower versus the AMG output of 503. Bringing in the only non-German competitor in this test which is the Jaguar bringing in a massive 550 horsepower for the same price market as the other two, giving the Jaguar the beginning edge when it comes to the overall power. So how did the overall tests come out, take a look.

Third Place

In a comparison like this there really isn’t a last place and the least expensive of the bunch offers the most power, but was much slower to cross the line in a full comparison test. The car described is the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe. As a “look at me” type of car it’s perfect for driving past and waking up neighbors who have been in your business too long and it’s certainly comfortable and adaptable on the road. The large weight of 4,088 pounds makes it hard to justify the huge horsepower underneath and in this particular comparison makes this a sluggish player even though this is one of the finest cars on the planet.

Second Place

Filling the middle spot is the Mercedes-AMG GTS. With a long hood that is reminiscent of the old SLS and the back end that looks like a 911, this sports car has the lead in this test for overall straight line speed showing up with a time to reach sixty mph of only 3.0 seconds. Even with a speed such as that the separation between this car and the 911 came in the form of the agility which is necessary for any sports car to perform at the top of its game. The AMG is certainly a grand player in this game, but does still fall short to what is actually the fourth model from the top Porsche 911.

The Clear Winner

The Porsche 911 Carrera GTS carries the name proudly forward by defeating the other two in this comparison. The interesting and difficult part for the 911 during this test was the fact it was so severely outgunned for horsepower, making straightaways a losing battle, but when heading into a curve or S-turn it was easy to see why the Porsche 911 continues to be one of the greatest cars on the planet and had it been fitted with a comparable engine to the other two, there would have been little to no competition for the top spot.

In a comparison that may seem as if it was stacked against the Porsche, the 911 continues to be a leader. In order to have a car that was priced similarly the 911 used had only a six-cylinder engine versus the V8 of the other two and came in with nearly 100 less horsepower along with being a current model year player versus the next model. Even with all this against it, the Porsche 911 came out as the clear sports car winner with its amazingly perfect proportions and agility that the others simply cannot match.
